FOLK MAGIC (P.35)

The rituals of Boysun, like its folklore, blend together an Islamic world attitude with archaic conceptions about kind and evil spirits, cults of worship the ancestors, the fire and the Sun. One of such rituals is УjahrФ, preserved in Avlod, Sariosiyo, Kuchkak and Yakkatol kishlaks. It blends together traditions of Sufi meditation (УzikrФ) and shamanic rituals. The aim of jahr is to conjure away evil spirits from the body of ill person. The ritual is performed by УjahrchiФ, specially initiated folk healers. During the ritual devotions, suras of Koran, and Sufi texts by Ahmad Yassavi are read. The Rasulov dynasty of jahrchi from Avlod consider themselves as descendants of Said-Ata Ц one of the sons of Sufi sheikhs of the УYassaviyaФ tariqat (way) of Zangi-ata. Jahrchis invoke seven generations of ancestors, fairies Simion and Mullakush, and Sheikh Zangi-ata and asking them to heal the sick person. After each phrase the jahrchis lash the back of ill person with a whip. Imitating the voice of predatory animals, jahrchis engage in a battle against the evil spirits. Both healer and ill person enter into a trance during the jahr process. Some of jahrchis at this moment are able to lick a red-hot ladle or dagger. The ritual ends when the jahrchi consider that evil spirits have left the body of the ill person. Traditions of alternative (folk) medicine are also well developed in Boysun. Local healers widely use dried tea, tinctures, or oils of mountain herbs. Acupuncture has an original form in Boysun: for stimulation of inner strength of the organism they stimulate active spots of the body by means of camelТs thorns.
