HOLY PLACES(P.17)

One of the most concealed sides of Boysun folk culture is linked to the veneration of holy mazaars (graves). It is based on the belief in aid from the pure spirits of dead saints. The cult places of Boysun include the mazaars of Khoja Bulgan (on the way from Boysun to Sairob), Khoja Sulton Vali (near the spring of Omonkhona), Khoja Kuchkar-ata (at the beginnings of Inkabad-sai), Khoja Maykhona (near a spring in the narrow canyon of Machai-sai). Some of them obviously date from in pre-Islamic times. Near some of them are located old cemeteries with the “qabrtosh” headstones. In the northern part of district center of Boysun, near the nut-wood Chor-Chinor, is the mazaar of Khoja Surkhpush-ata (Saint in red clothes). According to local legend Surkhpush-ata was one of the mentors of the outstanding Sufi Jalal ad-Din Rumi or of his father who in the beginning of the 12th century escaped from the Mongols from Balhth region. In Qurghoncha the tomb of Saint Khazrati Ali or Khoja Dod (Ismail Baghdadi). As one of the most worshiped cult places among the women of Boysun is the mausoleum of Bibi-Shirin in Kara-buyin kishlak. In the past this site was a cult place of worship to Anakhita. According to the legend Bibi-Shirin was the sister of Saint Sultan Vali, an extraordinary woman who communicated with spirits. When she was followed by her brother and seen surrounded by peris (fairies) she had to run away from the family. It is considered that she was swallowed up by the earth at this place. A distinguishing feature of holy burial grounds is a wooden pole to which are attached metal balls and images of palms “besh-panja” (five fingers).
