CHORSU (P.51)

Chorsu is the central market building of medieval Samarkand located on a crossroad of six city arteries nearby the Registan square. Spanish ambassador Clavijo described, how in 1404, when he visited Samarkand, under the order of Amir Temur, the new wide street, going from Chorsu to Ahanin gates (not far from Hazret Hyzr mosque), had been set for a few days. It was a wide trading avenue with shops and pavilions for merchants, going between the new cathedral mosque and madrasah of Bibi-Khanym. The medieval structure of Chorsu has lost. The younger dome-arched structure is tim, constructed in the second half of the 18th century by the governor of Bukhara, Shah Murad. It was a time of Samarkand reviving after devastative intrusion of Iranian shah Nadir. Tim represents a polygonal premise with a high dome and six radiating corridors under small domes. For a long time, it has been a trading center. Recently, tim has lost its commercial functions and serves as a public building for cultural and educational purposes.
