Boysun. Masterpieces of Central Asia

CARPETS (P.26-27)

Boysun has its own tradition of carpet weaving, represented mainly by woolen kilims and felt mats. But up to the present time knotted carpets there are also produced with classical “steppe” motifs. Alongside carpets, other woven household carpet articles include: sacciform bags “khurjuns”, horse-covers (caparisons) “digdiga”, praying rugs “joynamozes”, table cloths “dasturkhons”. During Soviet times there was a carpet factory Boysun. But today, carpet making is mainly carried out in domestic conditions. For this purpose simple wooden looms made by local masters are used.
An important role is still played in Boysun inhabitants’ daily life by felt articles. Felt cloths play an important role in interior decoration of horses and yurts. “Kighiz” felt carpets are in great demand. The patterns of “kighiz” – meander motifs, spiral swastikas, rhombuses – are very simple, carrying features of deep archaism and at the same time amazingly close to modern concepts of design. A characteristic element of “kighiz” decoration is a big crescent with hornlike tips, and a small rhombus in the center. This is a classical element of “steppe” art, a specific symbol of nomad culture that expresses the most important ideas of their life – ideas of life and fertility. Craftswomen call this old pattern “tugdona-gul”. Tugdona is a sacred tree, strong and durable, from which they make amulets to protect from evil spirits. The same protective role is played by the pattern on a carpet.
