Boysun. Masterpieces of Central Asia

FLORA AND FAUNA (P.10-11)

The foothills are occupied by steppes and semideserts whose natural vegetation consists of absinthium and subshrubs and pistachio trees. The fauna of the foothills include dipus, turtles, lizards and snakes (agama, gurza and copperhead). In the past the slopes were covered with archa. Unfortunately, economic activity, principally iron founding, has led to deforestation, and the archa woods have receded deep into the mountains. Almond trees occupy the rocky grounds. Nut and plane-tree groves form a relic of local flora. The high foothill represents the dry steppe with varieties of grass. The tops of the Boysun mountains are rich in grasses, sub alpine and alpine meadows. These are places of summer pastures. Flowers enjoys the special respect of Boysun people as well as in Surkhandarys in general. They are represented by almonds and hedge rose, apricot and peach. The period of their flowering is called the “Time of Red Flowers” when the new year – Navruz – comes. Fruits, pips and even branches of flowering trees are esteemed for their curative qualities and attributed magic properties, capable of resisting malicious forces.
The mountains were always a place of hunting. The local fauna is rich in hares and foxes, wild boars and goats, wolves and bears. Some traces of the ancient cult of the wolf still remain, and a necklace of wolf teeth is recognized as a strong protective amulet. A hunter who has killed a wolf should make a propitiatory prayer and exhibit the wolf in his village. Boysun people tell the story that in the 1960s a shepherd had to protect his flock from a bear. The animal attacked the man, but the shepherd feigned death and escaped with his life. Birds are represented by wrens, nightingales, bearded vultures, larks and the black cock. Vultures are a familiar sight, soaring in the sky of Boysun; when a prey appears, hundreds of these enormous birds can gather around it.
